Shadows and Patterns: Why the Old Points to the Better
Today we’re diving into one short but powerful verse in Hebrews chapter 8, verse 5. This verse explains why the Old Testament tabernacle and its priests were never the definitive answer—they were previews, pointers to something far greater in Jesus Christ.
Our text verse says:
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. (Hebrews 8:5)
I. Context: Setting the Stage
The book of Hebrews builds a case that Jesus is better than everything in the old system:
- Better than angels
- Better than Moses
- Better than the Aaronic priests
By chapter 8, the writer sums it up:
“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens” (Hebrews 8:1).
Jesus is our High Priest right now, ministering in the true heavenly sanctuary—not a tent made by human hands.
The earthly priests served in something temporary. Verse 5 tells us why: it was a shadow and a copy of heavenly things. The old system was designed to point forward and upward to Christ.
II. The “Shadow” – What It Is and Why It Matters
- Greek word: σκιά (skia, skee-AH) = shadow, outline, faint image cast by a real object
- Paired with ὑπόδειγμα (hypodeigma, hoo-POH-dee-gmah) = copy, example, sketch
What the shadow is
The entire earthly tabernacle system:
- Priests
- Sacrifices
- Altar
- Curtains
- Whole setup from Exodus
The priests “serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things.”
What it means
- Impermanence: A shadow exists only because something real blocks the light. When the real object is revealed, the shadow vanishes. The old system was a shadow of good things to come; Christ is the substance
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Colossians 2:16-17
1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, [and] not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. Hebrews 10:1 - Pointer/Preview: The tabernacle rituals were God-given illustrations directing attention to Christ’s greater priestly work.
- Inferiority: It could never fully perfect worshipers.

Imagine holding your hand up to a light so the shadow falls on the wall. That shadow shows the shape of the hand, but it’s not the hand itself—it’s dim, temporary, yet reveals something true about the real thing.
III. The “Pattern” – Divine Blueprint, Not Human Design
- Greek word: τύπος (typos, τύπος, TOO-pohs) = mark, impression, blueprint, archetype
What the pattern is
The exact heavenly design God showed Moses on the mountain (quoting Exodus 25:40).
God warned Moses: “See… that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.” Moses got a precise heavenly prototype and was told to replicate it exactly—no creative changes allowed.
What it means
- Divine authority: Worship must follow God’s revealed will, not human invention.
- Heaven-to-earth connection: The earthly tabernacle had to match the heavenly original to represent it accurately. The true tabernacle is “which the Lord pitched, and not man” (Hebrews 8:2).
Jesus is ” A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.” Hebrews 8:2 - Typological depth: τύπος TOO-pohs often means a type/figure pointing to Christ (e.g., Romans 5:14).
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. Rom 5:14
Here, the heavenly original controls everything; the earthly is copy → fulfilled in Christ. In Hebrews 9:24 we read:
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

Think of a blueprint versus the finished building. Moses didn’t invent the tabernacle—he followed the divine blueprint God revealed.
IV. The Big Theological Payoff
- Earthly priests: ministered in shadows and copies → temporary, repeated sacrifices
- Jesus: ministers in the true tabernacle → once-for-all, eternal ministry. The Bible says in Hebrews 8:6:
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. Hebrews 8:6
The shadows fade when the substance arrives. The old system prepared the way; Christ is the fulfillment.
Don’t cling to shadows when the reality has come. The Old Testament is preparatory—it points straight to Jesus.

- Thank God for the superior covenant Jesus mediates.

Father, thank You for revealing Yourself through shadows and patterns that all lead to Christ. Help us see Jesus clearly as our High Priest, and live in grateful obedience to the better covenant He secured. In His name, Amen.
