How to Look up Bible Verses

If you don’t have a Bible, you can lookup Bible verses online. I recommend the BlueLetterBible.org website.

How to Look up Bible Verses

How do Bible References Work?

You can look up Bible references either online or in a Bible in book form. Let’s start with looking up Isaiah 42:2 online.

Blue Letter Bible (online at blueletterbible.org)

Bible references take the following form: Book:Chapter:Verse. For example, we’re going to look up a verse in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 42, Verse 2.

That Bible reference will look like this: Isaiah 42:2. If you want to look up this verse in the Blue Letter Bible, type (or copy and paste) the reference into the search box as follows:

When you click the green search button, Blue Letter Bible will show you the Bible text associated with that verse.

In the above image, you see Isaiah abbreviated as “Isa.” You can save time and space by abbreviating the books of the Bible with the first few characters.

Looking up Verses in a Physical Bible

If you have a physical Bible (in book form), you can use the same reference system to find your scripture verse. If you’re unfamiliar with the Bible and the order of the books, you can look in the front of your Bible for a table of contents, such as the one below.

This table of contents lists (1) Books of the Old Testament in their order and (2) Books of the New Testament. If you do not know whether your Bible reference is in the Old or New Testament, you can use the alphabetical list of the Books of the Bible found at the bottom of the page.

Note: Some Bibles may not list the Books of the Bible in alphabetical order.

Looking up a Bible verse in the Bible in book form

Your Bible reference comes in the form of Book:Chapter:Verse

In our example, we’re looking in the Book of Isaiah for Chapter 42 and Verse 2.

The format of this reference will be: Isaiah 42:2 or Isa 42:2. Remember: you may abbreviate the books of the Bible using the first few letters of its name.

Step 1: Find the book. In our example, Isaiah. When you find the book, you will also find the page number that book starts (i.e., the first page of that book) in your Bible

Note: Some Bibles may not list the Books of the Bible in alphabetical order.

When you go to the page listed, see the beginning of the book. Here, you’ll find the first page of Isaiah.

Here’s the same page with some identifiers labeled.

Step 3: Flip to the page with the chapter you’re looking for. This is up to you to find.

The page lists the chapter number in large letters. Below that heading, you will see smaller numbers. Those numbers are the verse numbers for that chapter.

You have now looked up Isaiah 42:2 in the Bible in book form.
