God Shakes Earth & Heaven – Hope in the Unshakable Kingdom
Our text for today comes from the book of Hebrews, chapter 12, verse 26.
The Scripture
Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
Understanding the Plain Meaning
God spoke once at Mount Sinai, and the very ground trembled. The people stood in awe and fear. That was the old way. But now He speaks a greater promise. He will shake not only the earth but also heaven itself. Everything that can be moved will be moved. Everything temporary will be removed. Only the things that cannot be shaken will remain forever.
This is not a message of fear. This is a message of incredible hope. God is clearing the way. He is making room for what lasts. In a world that feels unstable, He is reminding you that His kingdom stands firm. The shaking you see around you is not destruction for destruction’s sake. It is preparation for something far better. God is working in your favor. He is removing the temporary so the eternal can take its rightful place in your life.
The Historical Context – The Shaking at Sinai
Think back to that day at the mountain. God came down in thunder and lightning. The earth quaked under His voice.
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
(Exodus 19:18)
The people begged Moses to speak to them instead of God. They could not bear the power.
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
(Exodus 20:18–19)
That shaking showed His holiness. It showed that the old covenant was built on fear and distance.
But the writer of Hebrews says that was only the beginning. The first shaking pointed forward to a greater one. The old system, with its rules and rituals, was always meant to be temporary. It prepared the way for the new. Now God speaks from heaven through His Son. The promise is bigger. The shaking will be complete. And the result will be glorious.
Insights from the Original Greek
The original words carry power and precision that deepen our confidence.
The word for “shook” is seio. It means to agitate, to cause violent movement, to make something tremble from its very foundation. This is not a gentle breeze. It is the kind of shaking that rearranges everything.
The phrase “yet once more” comes from the Greek eti hapax. It carries the idea of finality. This shaking will happen one last time. After this, no more will be needed.
In the very next verse the writer explains the purpose:
And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
(Hebrews 12:27)
The Greek word for “removing” is metathesis—a complete change of position, a transfer into something new. The things “made” are created things. They have a beginning and therefore an end. But the unshakable things have no end because they come from God Himself.
These words are not threats. They are guarantees. God is so committed to your good that He will shake away everything that cannot last so you can live in what will never fail.
What God Is Shaking Today
Look around. You see the shaking already happening.
- Economies rise and fall, but God’s provision never does.
- Governments change, leaders come and go, but His throne is established forever.
Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.
(Psalm 93:2)
- Relationships that seemed solid can crumble, yet your relationship with Him remains secure.
- Health can be challenged, but the healing power of His Word stands firm.
- Careers shift, opportunities appear and disappear, but your calling in Christ is unchanging.
Every shaking is God saying, “This is not your foundation. I am.” He is not punishing you. He is promoting you. He is clearing out the clutter so the real blessings have room to flow.
What Will Remain Unshakable
After the shaking, these are the things that will stand:
- The kingdom of God – a kingdom that cannot be moved.
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

- The promises of God – every one of them yes and amen.
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
(2 Corinthians 1:20)
- The blood of Jesus – speaking better things than Abel’s.
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

- Your salvation – sealed by the Holy Spirit.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.

- The peace that passes understanding – no circumstance can take it.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

- The joy of the Lord – your strength that never runs dry.
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

- Love that never fails – the very nature of God living in you.

These are not wishes. These are realities. When everything else falls away, these will still be standing, and you will still be standing in them.
The Purpose Behind the Shaking
God shakes so that only the eternal remains. He removes the temporary so you can fully enjoy the permanent. This is the heart of the good news. You are not being shaken out of His hand. You are being shaken into a better position.
Think about it like this. A gardener shakes the dirt off the roots of a plant before transplanting it into richer soil. The shaking feels uncomfortable for a moment, but the result is stronger growth and greater fruit. God is transplanting you into the rich soil of His unshakable kingdom. The discomfort is only preparation for the abundance.
Living in the Unshakable Kingdom Right Now
You do not have to wait for the final shaking to enjoy the benefits. You can live unshakably today.
- Anchor your mind daily in His Word. Let it be the one thing that never moves.
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
(Matthew 24:35)
- Give thanks in every situation. Gratitude keeps your heart steady when the ground trembles.
- Serve others with the gifts God has given you. Generosity releases more of His unshakable supply.
- Speak His promises over your life. Your words have power to agree with heaven.
- Stay in fellowship with other believers. Together you stand stronger than alone.
- Keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. He never changes.

When you do these things, the shaking around you becomes background noise. The main reality in your life is the steady, strong, unshakable presence of God.
New Testament Connections That Strengthen Our Hope
Jesus said it clearly:
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
(Matthew 24:35)
The apostle Peter described the same final shaking and then gave this beautiful instruction:
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Paul reminded the Colossians that we have been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son. That kingdom cannot be shaken.
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.
(Colossians 1:13)
Every New Testament writer points to the same truth. The shaking is coming, but for the believer it is not bad news. It is the announcement that the best is on its way. The temporary is leaving so the eternal can fully arrive.
The Glorious Future God Has Prepared
Imagine it. No more fear of loss. No more unstable foundations. No more wondering if today’s blessing will be gone tomorrow. Instead, a kingdom filled with peace, joy, abundance, and the constant presence of God. Every tear wiped away. Every need met. Every promise fulfilled.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
(Revelation 21:4)
This is not a distant dream. It is your coming reality. And the beautiful part is that you begin tasting it right now. The more you trust in the unshakable, the more the unshakable shows up in your daily life—unexpected provision, sudden favor, deep peace in the middle of chaos, joy that cannot be explained.
God is not holding back. He is preparing the way. Every shake is another step closer to the fullness He has promised you.
