Despising the Shame: Run Your Race with Joy!
Today let’s look at a powerful truth from God’s Word that can set you free. In Hebrews 12:2 it says, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus faced the ultimate humiliation—the cross was designed to bring maximum shame. Yet He despised it. He treated that shame as nothing, refusing to let it stop Him from the joy ahead. He looked past the mockery, the nakedness, the rejection, straight to the victory and the glory of redeeming you and me. If Jesus could despise the shame for our sake, how much more can we despise the shame of our own past mistakes so we can step into the abundant life God has for us!
Why Shame Holds Us Back
Shame whispers lies like: “You’re not good enough,” “You’ll never change,” “Everyone knows what you did.” It keeps us chained to yesterday, afraid to dream big, serve boldly, or pursue the calling God placed in our hearts.
But hear this: Your past does not define your future when God is in it!
- Illustration: Think of a runner in a race. If they keep looking back at a stumble from the starting line, they’ll trip again or slow down. But the champion fixes their eyes forward, shakes off the fall, and sprints toward the finish. That’s you today—shake off the shame, fix your eyes on Jesus, and run!
God’s Promise: Your Past Is Forgiven and Forgotten
God doesn’t want you carrying yesterday’s burdens. He offers complete release.
- Isaiah 43:18-19 — Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
God is saying, “Stop dwelling on what was! I’m doing something fresh and beautiful in your life right now.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 — Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
You’re not the same person who messed up. In Christ, you’re brand new—fresh start, clean slate, new identity!
- Philippians 3:13-14 — Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul, who once persecuted believers, chose to forget the past and press forward. You can too!
No Condemnation—Only Freedom!
- Romans 8:1 — There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
No condemnation! Not a little bit, not sometimes—none! When you walk with the Spirit, shame has no legal right to accuse you.
- 1 John 1:9 — If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Confess it, receive forgiveness, and walk cleansed. God doesn’t hold it over you—He washes it away.
Practical Steps to Despise the Shame
- Fix your eyes on Jesus — Like Hebrews tells us, look to Him. When shame attacks, declare, “Jesus despised this for me—I’m despising it too!”
- Speak God’s truth over your life — Replace lies with Scripture. Say aloud: “I am forgiven. Old things are passed away. I am a new creation!”
- Take one bold step today — Whatever dream God put in your heart—start that business, share your testimony, step into ministry, mend a relationship—do it despite the past. Shame loses power when you move forward.
- Remember the joy set before you — Just like Jesus, focus on the blessing ahead: restored relationships, impact for God’s kingdom, peace that passes understanding, fulfilling your purpose.
You Are Destined for Greatness
Your past may have scars, but it doesn’t have to have chains. God has prepared good works for you to walk in (Ephesians 2:10). He wants you thriving, shining, accomplishing great things for His glory and your joy.
Today, despise the shame. Let it go. Step into the new thing God is doing. The race is yours to run—full speed ahead, head high, heart free!
You can do this. With God, nothing is impossible. Your best days are ahead—embrace them! Amen.
