As I continue my series on doctrine, I want to share with you the doctrine of the Virgin Birth. Through the Holy Spirit was Jesus conceived. He was born of the Virgin Mary.

The Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 7:14

The Doctrine of the Virgin Birth

Jesus Christ was born of a virgin.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Luke 1:26-27

The Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ is a fundamental doctrine in Christianity, highlighting the unique nature of Jesus as both fully human and fully divine.

This doctrine is based on the biblical accounts found in the Book of Isaiah, as well as in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. These describe the miraculous conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the virgin Mary.

Analysis

The Gospel of Matthew opens with a genealogy that traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham. This genealogy emphasizes Jesus’ Jewish heritage and fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies of a coming Messiah (Matthew 1:1-17). The account of Jesus’ birth in Matthew 1:18-25 focuses on Joseph, Mary’s betrothed husband, who learns of her pregnancy and intends to divorce her discreetly. However, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream, revealing that the child conceived in Mary is from the Holy Spirit and that He will be the Savior (Matthew 1:20-21).

The Gospel of Luke provides a more detailed account of the Virgin Birth, focusing on Mary’s perspective. In Luke 1:26-38, the angel Gabriel appears to Mary, announcing that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of the Most High. This is the One who will sit on the throne of David and reign forever (Luke 1:32-33). Mary, a virgin, questions how this can be possible. In response, the angel explains that the Holy Spirit will come upon her, and the power of the Most High will overshadow her. As a result, the miraculous conception of Jesus (Luke 1:34-35) occurred.

People can understand the importance of the Virgin Birth in several ways.

  1. Fulfillment of prophecy: The Virgin Birth fulfills the Old Testament prophecy found in Isaiah 7:14, which states, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” This prophecy points to the coming of the Messiah, who would be born of a virgin, emphasizing Jesus’ unique and divine nature.
  2. Jesus’ divine nature: The Virgin Birth shows that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine. His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit in the womb of a human mother, Mary, highlights His divine origin, while His birth as a human baby emphasizes His full humanity. This dual nature of Jesus is essential to understanding His role as the Savior and Redeemer. Only One who is both God and man can atone for the sins of humanity (Hebrews 2:14-18).
  3. Jesus’ sinlessness: As the Son of God, Jesus was without sin, making Him the perfect sacrifice for the redemption of humanity (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 2:22). The Virgin Birth ensures the original sin inherited from Adam did not taint that Jesus. His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit bypassed the normal process of human reproduction, which is tainted by sin (Romans 5:12-21).
  4. The role of the Holy Spirit: The Virgin Birth emphasizes the active role of the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of Jesus. The Holy Spirit conceived Jesus in Mary’s womb, empowered Him for His ministry, and guided Him throughout His life on earth (Luke 1:35; 4:1, 14, 18). This highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit in the triune Godhead and His ongoing work in the lives of believers.

Thanks to the virgin birth and the sinless perfection of Jesus, we have and Advocate with the Father. This access to God comes through Jesus’ humanity and dignity.

We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.

Hebrews 4:15

In conclusion, the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ is a foundational doctrine in Christianity, highlighting His unique nature as both fully human and fully divine. The biblical accounts found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke emphasize the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. They also attest to Jesus’ sinlessness and the active role of the Holy Spirit in His life and ministry. The Virgin Birth serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus’ divine origin, His redemptive mission, and the essential role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.
