Course of this World

Our text for today is Ephesians 2:2.

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Ephesians 2:2

Those who have not accepted salvation flow with the world, much as a river follows its course. You can choose which course to follow. Believers choose God over Satan, They chose to follow the Holy Spirit rather than “the spirit that now worketh in the children of obedience.

As believers follow a good course, unbelievers follow the course of Satan.

Before reading farther, choose God. Accept Christ as your savior. Change your course. Choose God.

Who wants to follow Satan? Sadly, Satan sets your default course. Most people never change course, resulting in their eternal destruction.

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Matthew 7:13

I exhort you to choose God’s course, the strait gate.

The course of this world

The underlying word for “course” has overtones that relate to the world and time. God framed this world with time, but He does not follow time. In the end, God will destroy time and it will no longer exist.

To illustrate the complexity of this term, Plato describes it as “The time which is created with the world as a moving image of eternity.” (Kittel 1:198).

Correlating with time, the word can also pertain to the duration of the world.

The word refers to the infinite series of ages which make up eternity.

The world began on a good course, but God allowed humanity to choose an alternate course, an evil one. As we move toward eternity, multitudes have chosen the course of this world, rather than God’s Way. They let Satan, rather than God, choose their ways. When we accept God’s salvation, that changes.

We need to change course

Apostle Paul speaks of our Savior, saying,

[Jesus] gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Galatians 1:4

Every human needs deliverance. Jesus wants to deliver us.

Perhaps now, you can better understand the words of Jesus when He speaks of his followers saying,

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

John 17:16

God’s salvation puts us on a different course, a good course, which leads to eternal life. We stay in the world, but we set out on God’s course rather than Satan’s.

Illustrating “The Course”

Think about how we use the word, “course.”

  • Golf course.
  • A river’s course.
  • Educational course.
  • The course of a race.

All these involve both time and a prescribed pathway towards a goal. As time passes, you pass through the course until you reach the end. We recognize death as the end of life as we know it and the beginning of eternity.

Your course depends on what you choose between now and your personal end.

Time Past

In the past, we walked in the world’s course. Thank Adam and Eve for that. At first, only one course existed: A good course. God allowed His trophy of creation to choose a different course, forever changing the natural spiritual condition of humans.

Think of this as two rivers diverging from the same source. At first, little difference exists between them. As they run their course, however, the difference between them becomes increasingly greater. That can illustrate the problem. How do we change from the evil course to the good course? Only through God’s gift of salvation.

Testing for Salvation

If you never have changed courses, then you have never accepted God’s salvation.
